Research Summary

Pancreatic beta cell biology and the pathophysiology of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus

The primary goal of Dr. Roe's research is to identify and characterize the molecular mechanisms underlying beta cell dysfunction and death associated with diabetes. The concentration of calcium ions in beta cells is precisely and finely regulated by an extensive array of calcium signaling mechanisms. A defect in one or more of these regulatory  mechanisms is likely to have a profound impact on beta cell function and viability. Defining the molecular mechanisms that regulate insulin secretion and beta cell viability is essential for development of new strategies for the treatment and prevention of diabetes.
